Baraza Stephen

Stephen has utilized his CROSO scholarship to pursue a bachelors in law at Islamic University in Mbale, Uganda. Stephen enjoys challenging himself because although his classes are difficult, he is immensely interested in the material that is being discussed. During his first semester at Islamic University in 2018, Stephen shared that his favorite class was constitutional law because he enjoys learning about the history of Uganda’s government. Stephen plans on becoming a lawyer once he graduates because he is passionate about promoting justice -- not only in his community, but throughout his whole country.

Stephen had known for many years that he wanted to pursue a career in law. In fact, he cites his professional aspirations as the driving force behind why he chose to participate in certain activities in secondary school. For example, his choice to be involved at C.R.O in the music and drama programs. In regards to that relationship, Stephen stated, “At CRO there are a lot of activities such as music and drama, sports, peer education and others… I therefore choose music and drama as they can add to my skills to achieve my goal of being a future lawyer.” 

In his free time, Stephen enjoys listening to gospel music, reading Bible stories and novels, along with spending time with his friends and family. When Stephen is home, he often encourages his four younger brothers to work towards pursuing an education and enjoys reflecting on his experiences so far. 

Vision for the Future:

Stephen has always been passionate about advocating for people throughout his community. He has first hand experience with the corruption that occurs around him and understands it. As a result, he is passionate about becoming a lawyer to protect the human rights of people in Uganda. 

More on Stephen’s Background:

Stephen’s passion about helping others is due to his experience of living on the streets. It is clear that his aspirations are fueled by the desire to help people since he was without help until C.R.O. (CROSO’s partner organization) helped him. Stephen and his four siblings worked to support each other by scavenging the streets to sell scrap metal. Once Stephen was given more opportunities through C.R.O, he became an exceptionally active student. He was able to become an advocate for children’s rights through his music and his radio show at C.R.O. He also participated in C.R.O.’s peer educator club, which included conducting outreach on the streets to other current street children. In regards to school, Stephen became a member of the drama club, debate club, was appointed chairperson of the Scripture Union Club and was also recognized as “Most Disciplined Student.” Stephen’s hardwork and determination throughout secondary school and at C.R.O provided a great foundation for him to become a successful lawyer.
